Chris Packham, Springwatch 2009 & the Olympic Title for Smiths-referencing

Chris Packham presented The Really Wild Show when I was a nipper, and I loved it. There was even a man who had a surname like a squirrel. Now, Chris had a kind of a quiff going on, but I just thought it was him tryng to look a cockatiel. It was quite convincing. Or maybe he was having a quiff-off with Pat Sharp?

Anyway, taking over from Moz-hatin' Billy Oddie on Springwatch this year (a programme where we get the latest news on chicks hatching and stuff), Chris was determined to shoe-horn in as many Smiths references as possible. He even fits in a mention for the new Southpaw Grammar: "Fantastic Bird". And at the end, gives his co-presenter a bunch of gladioli (where did he get glads from in the Spring, for heaven's sake? Daffodils would've sufficed, Mr Packham!). The wonder is, of course, that he didn't present them in his back pocket, ready to be plucked.

This all makes Mr Packham far more awesome than Oddie, who - away from clowning with that man in the Union Jack waistcoat - is a curmudgeonly old git (maybe he feels he has to wrestle Moz on who is the most curmudgeonly?) who doesn't like cats.

So, watch and listen and be amazed at Chris Packham's ability to stick in far more Smiths references than you ever have. In your life. Ever. Bow down, people. A demigod walks amongst us and he's wearing a T-shirt that says "punk" on it.
